How to get into College Basics

For Students

You can be certain about one thing, if you want to consider yourself worthy of attending a college of your choice you need to get very good grades. Students with high GPAs stand a very good chance of getting initially noticed by the admissions department. Here are a few other basic tips on how to get yourself admitted into the college of your dreams.

First, SAT scores matters. Preparation is a ‘must’ for taking the SAT if you wish to achieve a good score so take a SAT prep guide or course that will help get you through your SATs. High SAT scores combined with a high GPA will also increase your chances of winning scholarships.

Secondly, taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses is also important. If the high school that you go to offers AP courses you should take advantage of them. AP courses will prove that you take your studies seriously to your admissions officers. AP courses also help you earn more college credits without paying a single dime.

Thirdly, get yourself more involved in extracurricular activities such as sports, charities, debate and community events. Participating in these activities will certainly improve your college application. When selecting your extracurricular activities, choose one that excites you, one that you are passionate about. This will lead to great stories to write about in your essay as well as future leadership opportunities.

Lastly, apply to at least 2 or 3 colleges. Of course, we all want to get into our #1 choice. Unfortunately, college admissions is unpredictable. Research 2-3 colleges that you will be excited to attend if admitted. One of those colleges should be a safety school. A safety school is a school which you KNOW you will get admitted into just based off your grades and SAT score.

For Parents

The decision of which college your teenager desires to go to, ultimately, is his/her choice and it is your duty as a parent to support your teen through the college admissions process. One important thing that a parent can do for their child is to consistently show their children how education should be at the core of their child's priorities. Colleges pay close attention a student's resume; however, more importantly, they pay attention to what students thinks about education as a whole. A good attitude towards education and towards learning helps a great deal in getting into nation's top colleges.
